Identification of novel cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory agents | Department of Medical Chemistry

In the laboratory of Laszlo Virag, Zsolt Regdon developed a new automated microscopy-based high-content screening assay for the identification of novel cytoprotective compounds. After validation of the assay, he screened a drug library containing ca 800 compounds. The screen yielded several cytoprotective agents and the group went on to characterize some of the lead compounds. They have demonstrated that one of the hit compounds, ciclopirox also had anti-inflammatory effects. The paper was published in the British Journal of Pharmacology.
